View Location

Swartvlei Beach is a 3 km stretch of sandy shoreline near Sedgefield, framed by natural sand cliffs and rocky outcrops. The beach is popular for, especially near Gericke’s Point, a rock formation said to resemble a lion’s head. The point features natural pools where visitors can safely swim and explore (best during low tide), while also providing excellent spots for whale and dolphin watching and enjoying the coastal scenery.

Safety & Lifeguard Information

Lifeguards are deployed daily during peak summer as part of the Blue Flag program:

  • 1 December - 31 January: 09:00 – 17:00

Pet & Dog Policy

  • Dogs are not allowed on the sand since this is a protected area with endanged birdlife.

  • Leashed dogs are permitted on paved beachfront walkways.

Activities

  • Water-based: Swimming, surfing, and exploring the natural pools at Gericke’s Point.

  • Beach-based: Walking, horse riding, and sunbathing.

  • Wildlife & Views: Whale and dolphin watching, birdwatching, and enjoying panoramic coastal views and natural sand cliffs.

Tips & Visitor Advice

  • Arrive early during holiday periods to secure a good spot, as this is a busy and popular beach

  • Exercise caution when swimming outside lifeguard hours or in the open ocean.
