Buffalo Bay Beach, or Buffelsbaai, is a serene coastal haven 15 km west of Knysna, nestled within the Goukamma Nature Reserve. This 5 km stretch of golden sand is ideal for swimming, surfing, and leisurely walks, with safe waters that make it popular for families. The area also offers rich marine life, including dolphins and seasonal whales, making it a tranquil yet adventurous coastal escape. Braai facilities are available down the road just past the bathroom facilities. 

Safety & Lifeguard Information

Lifeguards operate at Buffels Bay main beach during the holiday period:

  • 1 December - 31 January: 09:00–17:00 *(times may vary)

Pet & Dog Policy

  • Dogs are allowed on the beach, provided they are kept on a leash.

  • During peak seasons, dog walking is restricted to before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors.

Activities

  • Water-based: Swimming, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing.
  • Beach-based: Walking, sunbathing, picnicking, beach games.

  • The beach area offers basic facilities, including a convenience store and restaurant, ensuring that refreshments are readily available.

  • This is a very busy and popular beach during the holiday times, so come early to secure a spot and prepare to share the space with others.
