Brenton-on-Sea, a tranquil village 15 km west of Knysna on the Garden Route, features a 5 km stretch of pristine beach bordered by sandstone cliffs and indigenous vegetation. Connecting seamlessly to Buffalo Bay, it’s perfect for walks, sunbathing, and beachcombing, while also supporting conservation of the endangered Brenton Blue Butterfly.

Safety & Lifeguard Information

Lifeguards operate as part of the Blue Flag program:

  • 1 December - 31 January: 09:00–17:00

Pet & Dog Policy

  • Dogs are allowed on the beach, provided they are kept on a leash.

  • During peak seasons, dog walking is restricted to before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors.

Activities

  • Water-based: Swimming, surfing, and bodyboarding.

  • Beach-based: Walking (including the scenic route to Buffalo Bay), and sunbathing.

Tips & Visitor Advice

  • Brenton-on-Sea is home to the endangered Brenton Blue Butterfly. Visitors are encouraged to respect conservation areas and avoid disturbing local wildlife .
